How to use Instagram trends for your Art Licensing Business

If you are anything like me, I STRUGGLE with with what the heck to do to stay at all relevant on Instagram. I also have to tell you, my general Instagram strategy is to do as little as possible with the greatest possible output. I recently found myself seeing all of these cute trends popping up on Instagram and feeling left out because they didn’t really work with the type of content I usually post.

You probably know what trends I am talking about. My favorite one this summer has been “this and…” where someone posts a picture of something and then adds in text that says “this and… [insert whatever here]. A great example that I always love is Grey Malin’s Instagram account, see this example below.

But then, as I thought a little bit more about it… why couldn’t I take part in these trends? All they are is a visual + test, and I have those things! I realized that I didn’t have to use photographs, I could just use my art. And I didn’t have to use a typewritten font, I could just handwrite text on my images, because thats way more authentic to my brand.

So, I gave it a go! The first trend I tried was “this and…”

As you can see… the results speak for themselves! I could not believe how this just TOOK off. My normal posts on Instagram get anywhere from like 200-2000 likes. 17k+ is crazy! Its the second most popular post I have ever done. And what is even wilder (but not shown in the image above) is that it was shared over 8k times!

Could I replicate this? Only one way to find out! So, I thought I tried it again! This time I tried the “the summer I… “ trend that sprang up from the hit show The Summer I Turned Pretty.

This one was not quite as sensational as the first one, but over 2K likes on a post is VERY Good for me, and I was so happy! I concluded that I was, in fact, in to something.

Here are three reasons why I LOVE this strategy:

  • Its a great way to reuse existing art in a new way

  • It works best as a carousel, which perfoms better than just a single image post

  • I love ANY chance to come up with fun puns or silly things and its refreshing to find making content not stressful for a change

Have you every tried this? I know that it’s not rocket science, and it’s nothing groundbreaking, but it was new for me and maybe can help inspire you as well! Please share your posts with me if you try this out!
